NEWS RELEASE – August 22, 2008
Nostalgia Broadcasting Cooperative, operator of community station CJNU is actively exploring all options to remain on the air following today’s announcement by the Canadian Radio Telecommunications Commission (CRTC).
The Commission has announced its decision following four applications for two FM frequencies in Winnipeg heard at a public meeting in June. NCI (Native Communications Inc.) is awarded the 104.7 spot on the dial. Evanov Communications, the other applicant for 104.7 is awarded a license conditional on filing an amendment within 90 days to use another frequency, presumably 106.3 FM.
Applications by a Winnipeg organization backed by David Asper and Newcap, both for 106.3 FM are denied outright.
Last month, Flava, which has been off the air for about a year had its license for 107.9 revoked by the CRTC. Nostalgia Broadcasting believes that this creates an opportunity for CJNU to move to that spot on the dial, perhaps on a permanent basis by seeking a CRTC license.
The Nostalgia Broadcasting Board is actively working with all parties involved to insure continuation and improvement of its FM broadcast service directed mainly to an older age demographic.
At the same time, the cooperative is seeking additional, alternative means of transmission for its unique community broadcasting service. Nostalgia Broadcasting Cooperative is very pleased to announce that MTS TV will carry Nostalgia Broadcasting - CJNU on its system, channel 725, starting Tuesday, August 26th. This provides an alternative method of receiving CJNU to listeners in 80,000 homes that subscribe to MTS TV, mainly in the Winnipeg area.
President Bill Stewart says that the MTS agreement will immediately give many listeners who now have difficulty receiving the low power (45 watt) FM signal improved access to CJNU.
